More Evidence that Mindfulness Helps Emotion Regulation in Children

The Mindfulness Clinic Blog More Evidence that Mindfulness Helps Emotion Regulation in Children – January 16, 2013 There have been a lot of new studies confirming that mindfulness meditation is helpful for younger people as well as adults. One of these studied the MindfulKid program, a 6-week course modelled on MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) that was taught to 199 Dutch schoolchildren.

The program helped kids enhance their bodily awareness and show their emotions more readily. Seven weeks after the program was completed, the children maintained the gains they had made and also were better able to understand their emotions and felt that life had more meaning. Parents reported less aggressive behaviour at home, and teachers reported that the children were more respectful and friendlier in the classroom.

This and other studies give us direction to consider a more widespread use of mindfulness meditation in schools for children. It is effective, inexpensive and the results are lasting.
