Police investigating fatal shooting, two others injured

SANDY, Utah — Police are investigating a shooting in Sandy that killed one person and sent two others to the hospital.

Officers said the shooting happened near 80 East and 86th South around 10:45 p.m. Sunday.

Police said one of the injured died at the scene and the two others were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition and the other in stable condition.

According to his family members, Simon Vasquez has been paralyzed by the shooting. They also said the second person injured is Vasquez’s girlfriend.

Detectives are interviewing a man who they call a person of interest. He was taken into custody in Midvale. Police recovered a hand gun with that man.

Residents who live in the area say they hear loud pops that sounded like fireworks before the sound of tires squealing on the pavement.

“I’ve never seen anything quite like it, I’ve never seen so many police officers down one street before, K-9 units going everywhere,” said Mike Tippetts, a neighbor. “[They were] chasing after something just right over by my house walking with the K-9 unit. It was definitely a surprise.”

Investigators have not said if there is more than one suspect involved, but they do say several people fled the scene.

“My understanding is that it was adults at this get together. It’s a family’s house, there were other people that came over. Don’t know the exact purpose of why everyone was there,” said Sgt Jon Arnold, Sandy City Police.

Police said the investigation is still active and they are trying to figure out if more people are involved.

A motive in the shooting is still unclear as police continue to investigate how the people knew each other.
