YMCA Invites Children, Families to Healthy Kids Days Saturday

YMCA Healthy Kids Day Help Kids Exercise Minds and Bodies

On Saturday, April 27, the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA is celebrating YMCA Healthy Kids Day with a free community event that encourages kids and families in the community to get active and live healthier. It features fun, active play and educational activities.

Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being.

“At the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family Y, we want to help ensure fewer kids are at risk of childhood obesity and more kids excel in school,” says Scott Doll, Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family Y executive officer. “Healthy Kids Day gets kids moving and learning. It also helps families get a jump on creating a healthier summer, and ultimately a healthier future.”

Dole Packaged Foods is sponsoring and providing fruit, activities and nutritional information for all YMCA Healthy Kids Day events throughout Georgia. “Because Dole Packaged Foods partners with the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) and Lt. Governor Casey Cagle’s Healthy Kids Georgia program, it is a natural extension to work with organizations like the Y,” says MartyOrdman, vice president of marketing and communications for Dole. “It takes everyone in the community moving forward to develop healthier kids.”

Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year. Healthy Kids Day helps parents think about what their kids need to grow and achieve all summer long.

“Georgia’s childhood obesity epidemic is too large forany one organization or person to address alone. We must work together to collaboratively present our children and families with healthy lifestyle options so we can bring about real change and tackle this daunting challenge,” said Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. “Innovative public-privatepartnerships like this bring together state, private, and community resources to confront the troubling trends we face in childhood obesity will have a lasting impact onfuture generations.”

Healthy Kids Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Y, 3655 Preston Ridge Road in Alpharetta. For more information, contact the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA at 770-664-1220 or visit www.ymcaatlanta.org.
