High Court vacates stay on doctors’ recruitment in Punjab

In a major relief to the state government that may facilitate its initiative to improve the health services in the state, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has vacated the stay on the recruitment of regular specialist and MBBS doctors.

A health department press release issued here today said, “the endeavor of the Health & Family Welfare Minister, Punjab, Sh Madan Mohan Mittal, to fill a number of vacant posts of regular specialists and MBBS doctors, received a shot in the arm with the vacation of stay imposed on these recruitment by the Punjab & Haryana High Court”.

The release said, on the directions of Health Minister, Punjab the department had taken an initiative to appoint regular Specialist doctors and MBBS doctors for improving the health care services in state with the objective to meet the shortage of doctors and paramedical in the state. Earlier, there were vacancies lying vacant in various health institutions located in the rural areas in the state which would now be filled.

During a ceremony held in the first week of July Mittal gave away appointment letters to 195 doctors, but these appointments were stayed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court due to the writ petition filed by some candidates.

However, now in a major relief to MBBS doctors selected by the Health & Family Welfare Department, Punjab, the Punjab & Haryana High Court has conditionally permitted the department to let these newly appointed doctors join their respective place of postings.

In this regard, Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health, Punjab have asked the Director Health & Family Welfare, Punjab,  Dr. J.P. Singh, that owing to the vacation of the stay by the Court, the process to facilitate the joining of these doctors may immediately be resumed. Further as per the decision of High Court, the merit lists of candidates may be revised and a specific number of posts may also be kept vacant till the final decision of the High Court.

In this regard Dr J.P. Singh informed that the candidates are being called for counseling and issuance of appointment letters in the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, Punjab on the next working day i.e. 13th August, 2012. The revised lists are being uploaded in the department’s website www.pbhealth.gov.in<http://www.pbhealth.gov.in>. Dr J.P. Singh advised the medical officers to check the latest status of their appointment in the health department website.
